The state-of-the-art, €80 million Johnston Court Shopping Centre (co-ordinates 54.27085 -8.475065), one of the countries biggest shopping centres, built by the well known civil engineers John Sisk and Son Ltd, opened its doors to the public on 25th October 2007.

After the official opening by the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Jimmy Devins TD, the crowds of several hundred people enjoyed live music and entertainment throughout the day, creating a buzz and an atmosphere which, the developers are confident, will reverberate around Johnston Court and indeed Sligo Town, for many years to come.

The new development, developed by Ray and Eileen Monaghan, has 28 commercial shop units and thirty apartments above ground floor level.

At ground floor level, there is now approximately 4,950 square metres of new gross floor space which includes some 3,580 square metres of new retail space, with the remainder being utilised for general access and service uses and circulation purposes.

At first floor level, there is 4,150 square metres of new gross floor space of which 3,765 square metres will be for retail space with the remainder for general access service uses and circulation purposes.

The total nett retail floor space for the Johnston’s Court Shopping Centre is approximately 8,345 square metres.

A central feature of the Johnston Court Shopping Centre is the new pedestrian mall connecting O’Connell Street with the Wine Street Car Park. The new mall will include a limited number of small shop kiosks.

The Johnston Court Shopping Centre is hoped to provide up to 200 jobs in a large number of well-known local, national and international retail outlets, including a comprehensive mix of fashion and non-fashion shops, a book shop, a record shop, a pharmacy, a game shop, a hairdresser unit, a telephone boutique and an electrical shop.

There are also be a restaurant and a number of cafes and juice bars included in the shopping mall.

The redevelopment of Johnston Court represents the implementation of part of Phase One of the Centre Block Masterplan which envisages a permanent route being constructed from Adelaide Street leading directly to the basement area. Thereby eliminating service vehicles from accessing the Wine Street Car Park, giving much needed relief to the car park.
