Sligo recently experienced the unannounced arrival of a brilliant new addition to the streetscape of the town.
The larger-than-life painting of Sligo‘s number one citizen William Butler Yeats, appeared recently (21st May 2014) on the gable-end of a former hostel in Lord Edward Street, between the bus station and the Inner Relief Road, where it can be seen by countless number’s of people travelling past it in motor cars every day of the week.
The painting has received nothing but highly complimentary comments from everyone who has seen it, and I personally think its a fantastic, very life-like, photo-realistic painting of one of Sligo‘s most important ex-patrons who is now a vital link in the towns tourist industry.
The painting is the brainchild of Sligo Tidy Towns Committee, who commissioned Nik Purdy to paint W.B. Yeats, and what a breath of fresh air it brings to the town.
It’s believed that Sligo Tidy Towns Committee are to give a similar treatment to some of the other derelict buildings throughout the centre of Sligo Town in advance of the upcoming Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann which will be taking place from August 10th to August 17th 2014.
